Of the eight household cats, six are indoor only and have been since they day we took them in. Number Eight, the Old Man, is indoor/outdoor but only on a harness and leash, because he likes to drink rainwater and if that is what will keep him healthy and hydrated, so be it. Number Four, Stumpy BunnyTail, was originally a stray who stayed on as the outside cat… though neuterred, he was in the habit of spraying to mark his space and that is not acceptable in any house, let alone one with multiple felines for competition. For that reason he was never brought inside as a permanent “house” cat.
Today I have made the potential mistake of allowing one of the other indoor-only cats to wear the harness and leash.
This I will probably regret, because now Babykitty knows there is a wonderfully smell-filled world beyond the windows. This is going to lead to demands for further outside adventures, and perhaps even attempts at the Door Dash. I have just complicated my life.
But I did discover, with some surprise, that my indoor-only cat and my outside-only cat are, apparently, already buddies; they sat side by side on the step watching birds.
The other cats will know she has been to the forbidden Outside. I guess I’ll be building a fenced cat yard tomorrow.
